A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a nurse, who has been given advanced training in how to care for patients, just like a doctor. In some of the states, the NPs are even allowed to perform the job of a doctor, without assistance from any doctor, but in some other states, they can work only under a licensed doctor. The nurses who are in the lower level, like the LVNs and the RNs do not have this freedom of choice. Thus becoming an NP is a good way to get mental satisfaction, good earnings and moreover you can avoid getting bossed over by another person.
Achieving this goal is not a very easy task. There are some prerequisites to get into this profession. You should hold a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, you should be a Registered Nurse (RN), and should have a master's degree in nursing, along with the specialization in the profession of a Nurse Practitioner. The training programs for NPs will include the student's specialization in some subject, sometimes it may be adult cases, sometimes the pediatric care etc. Becoming a highly demanded NP does not require the person to take any sort of formal exam and it all depends on your former degrees and the eligibility.
Working as nurse practitioners can also help to improve your earnings, as these jobs offer a very good salary package, right from the beginning. This would be much higher compared to the salary scale for the RNs. As per a study conducted, the average income of NPs was about $81000 a year, and the highest salary earned was about $9000 a year in the oncology department. But the job has its own tensions and workload. Never expect that you are going to join an 8 hour job! They may have to work around the clock and may even be required to be present any time, as a backup, if the doctors are not available. In this case, they are expected to take over the charge of providing assistance to the patients, giving the necessary first aid to any patients on an emergency case etc.
But as the days are progressing, this freedom that is experienced by the NPs is going to end because various doctors associations have come up hard against this law which allows the NPs to take over their duties. The hidden reason here is that, if the NPs are allowed to treat people just like doctors, then the demand for doctors would go down by a large extent! But on the other hand, the law is actually good in places where there is a shortage of good and qualified doctors. The claim of doctors is that these nurses will not be able to give the right treatment as each nurse is trained from different schools which may have different syllabi and means of teaching. But from the practical side, the profession of a nurse practitioner is one of the best you can pursue, may it be for the personal satisfaction or for the financial satisfaction it is going to provide you!
