In our own United States culture, birthdays represent the day we were born, and that date is continually celebrated year after year. This date is considered to be a lucky and happy time, and is anticipated with cheer and excitement for the upcoming event. We usually celebrate this day with a birthday cake and candles. One candle for each day of our birth. The famous "happy birthday" song is usually sung and the lucky birthday boy or girl is told to make a wish and blow out the candles. We were told to make a wish and not to tell anyone or the wish would not come true. One major part of the birthday celebrations is the giving of gifts. These gifts were given with love and thoughtfulness.

All presents should be carefully thought out, and based upon who the recipient is. A good example is small toddlers. They should not be given small toys that could be put into their tiny mouths which could cause choking. Teenagers are a hard group to buy for so a good birthday gift idea might be gift cards. They can go and purchase the specific items that they want.

Adults may consider buying a birthday gift base on the persons birthstone. Birthstones are gemstones that are associated with each month. They may be precious stones, such as diamonds, or semi-precious, such as Lapiz Lazuli. In each case they are considered lucky for their particular months and for those who believe in such things their healing powers are heightened during their months.

In Africa the birthday of a child is not observed as a special day. Instead, when African children reach a certain age they are initiated into the community with open arms. This allows them to learn about the laws of their culture and participate in ancient rituals. Coming of age initiations are commonly done in groups rather than with individual children.

The Latino culture has a tradition called "Quinceanera", which marks a 15 year old girls birthday passage into adult hood. Mexican birthday celebrations usually feature a pinata, which is a paper mache animal figure made to hold candy and small toys. At birthday parties, children take turns hitting the piata in hopes of breaking it open to expose all the goodies inside.

In the Chinese society tigers are believed to protect children. Family members bring newborns special food and present them with gifts of clothing or toys decorated with tigers. When a Chinese girl or boy turns one year old, a variety of objects and toys are placed on the floor around the child. According to ancient beliefs, the object that the child chooses is a symbol foreshadowing the profession he or she will pursue in life.

The birthday gifts ideas that we come up with should be careful personal expressions of our feelings for the birthday person of the day.
