When you go to the Arlington National Cemetery just how much there is to see and do. First thing anyone notices is the endless rows of headstones to show the graves of all that gave their lives to the many wars that the United States have been involved in and the Civil War between the North and the South.
The Robert E. Lee Memorial: Robert E. Lee's family actually owned the property that the cemetery is on and you can see the house they lived until 1861. The mansion has been restored to what it would have looked like in 1861 and contains some of the family furniture and belongings that were there at the time the family resided here.
Confederate Memorial: This was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1914 and was erected to honor those who had died in the Civil War. The woman had it built to try and show a solidarity between the Union and Confederate after the heavy casualties of the war. There are graves of those who fought for the South, and the Confederate soldiers who died in the Washington DC area after the war are also buried there.
The grave of John F. Kennedy: One the main attractions of the national Cemetery is the grave of the past president and also is his wife Jacqueline. Buried close to him is his brother Robert F. Kennedy.
Marine Corps War Memorial: This is where the memorial that was built in honor of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima is located. The famous photograph was taken during World War 2, and then 78 foot bronze memorial was created by Felix de Weldon.
Memorial Amphitheatre: This theatre seats around 6000 people and contains many tributes to the unknown dead of the past wars in the 20th century. There are services that are performed every Easter, Memorial Day and Veterans Day in honor of the fallen soldiers.
Tomb Of The Unknowns: Here is will you will see a piece of Colorado marble that sculptures are carved out of the largest blocks ever quarried. This is guarded 24 hours a day by members of the U.S. Army and is quite impressive when they do the change of the guard. This is where the tomb of the unknown soldiers are buried
Women In Military Service For America Memorial: You can see the memorial that honors all the women who have served in the defense of the United States. There are exhibits and an education Center that helps to Chronicle the history of the women.
